School Board Approves Changes to Transfer Policy

The Montgomery County School Board approved changes to the school division transfer policy on October 3, 2017. Policy 7-2.2 and Policy 7-2.4 provide the guidelines for students who wish to transfer schools within the division.

The approved policy includes the following provisions:

  • Transfer requests will be considered for students in elementary school.
  • MCPS will not accept transfer requests for students in grades six through 12.
  • MCPS will verify the residency of all fifth grade students to ensure that students are assigned to their zoned middle school for sixth grade.
  • Exceptions may be granted for elementary students rising into middle school who already have an older sibling in grades six through 12.
  • Students currently in grades six through 12 as transfer students will be allowed to remain in their current school through graduation

The Montgomery County School Board is expected to vote at its next meeting on a proposed policy change affecting transfer students. Currently, the parent of any student who lives within Montgomery County can request that their child attend another school in the County.

The proposed policy includes the following provisions:

  • Transfer requests will be considered for students in elementary school.
  • MCPS will not accept transfer requests for students in grades six through 12.
  • MCPS will verify the residency of all fifth grade students to ensure that students are assigned to their zoned middle school for sixth grade.
  • Exceptions may be granted for elementary students rising into middle school who already have an older sibling in grades six through 12.
  • Students currently in grades six through 12 as transfer students will be allowed to remain in their current school through graduation
